About

Biography:

  • Graduated in Chemistry 1998
  • PhD in Physical Chemistry 2003 (Single Molecule Spectroscopy)
  • Joined Fraunhofer IBMT 2004 (Laser Medicine Group)
  • Group Manager (Biomedical Optics)
  • Since then I widened my scope to cryobiology, biomaterials (predominantly biogenic Hydrogels), stem cell processing and screening Read-Out technology.

Interests:

  • Tailored sensing and imaging concepts for biomedical applications and beyond
  • High polymeric alginates, application, processing, chemical modification
  • Cryobiology & Biobanking: novel cryo-microscopy techniques and optical quality assessment tools for samples at LN2-contitions
  • Read out concepts for screening on spatially extended samples (organoids, spheroids) and in non-standard culture environments (e.g. hanging  drops)

Expertise:

  • Molecular spectroscopy (UV/Vis/NIR, Raman, fluorescence)
  • Laser Scanning Micropcopy (confocal fluorescence & Raman, two photon, SHG, photoacoustic microscopy)
  • Biomaterials
  • … and plenty of expertises in the biomedical field from our multidisciplinary team here at the institute (from physicians to physicists, from biologists to engineers)

Available equipment and techniques:

  • Hydrogel characterization and processing techniques (commercial and proprietary)
  • Spectroscopy: Absorption (UV/Vis/NIR), fluorescence, phosphorescence, reflection, Raman µ-spectroscopy
  • Laser scanning microscopes: Zeiss LSM 510 META, incl. non-linear kit and FLIM-option, fs-laser processing stage, home-built confocal Raman microscope, many custom-designed observation chambers
  • Differential scanning calorimeter (Perkin-Elmer DSC 8500), incl. LN2-cooling
  • … and plenty of techniques and instruments from my colleagues (S2-cell culture and testing infrastructure, tissue model & engineering facilities, a large cell banking unit, iPS-technology, nanoparticle preparation and testing labs, microsystems technology, ultrasound technology
